Educator

BOYS' LATIN OF PHILADELPHIA

In 2019, C.J. began working at Boys' Latin of Philadelphia Charter High School to bring back the school's theatre department. During his time, he teaches full-time college preparatory theatre education in a variety of theatrical disciplines. Each year, the theatre department produces 2 full-length productions. C.J. also serves as the high school fine arts department chair, where he oversees curriculum and classrooms in theatre, music, visual arts, and health/fitness. In 2024, the C.J. founded Thespian troupe #11493 with Boys' Latin.

C.J. has created the following high school level course curriculums during his time at Boys' Latin:

  • Introduction to Acting

    • Includes coursework in world building, Stanislavsky, Viola Spolin, Viewpoints, voice acting and production, film production, script analysis, and critical review​

  • Theatre Design

    • Includes coursework in set design, prop construction, lighting and sound design, costume design, practical makeup application, script analysis, and critical review​

  • Black American Playwrights

    • A literature class, with lessons created for works by a variety of Black American authors including Amiri Baraka, Suzan Lori-Parks, Jocelyn Bioh, Kirsten Greenidge, Lynn Nottage, Katori Hall, James Ijames, Stew, August Wilson, Lorraine Hansberry, Dominique Morriseau, Ntozake Shange, Keenan Scott II, Douglas Lyons, and Jackie Sibblies Drury.​

  • History of Black Theatre

    • A history course chaptering contributions of Black artists from ancient Africa through the Elizabethan period into America's minstrelsy, vaudeville, Broadway, and beyond.​

  • Playwriting

    • Includes coursework in monologue writing, scene writing, jukebox musicals, adaptations, character development, and dramatic structure.​

  • Presentation Skills

    • Includes coursework in nonsense poetry, vocal production, political speaking, slideshow presentations, and classic debate.​

Boys' Latin of Philadelphia was the first high school to produce Thoughts of a Colored Man by Keenan Scott II. To celebrate, Scott attended the opening night performance and participated in a Q&A session where we discussed his journey as a theatre maker, the importance of positive Black male representation in media, and the isgnifcance of black-made theatre in an ever-changing sociopolitical landscape.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE CERTIFICATION

C.J. holds an Instructional I Certification in 7-12 English from the State of Pennsylvania, earned by completing the Philadelphia Teaching Residency program through Drexel University.

PROFESSIONAL CHILD COORDINATOR

In addition to teaching in the classroom, C.J. has served as a child coordinator for young professional actors in the Greater Philadelphia community. Credits include:
